This 4-hour trip takes you to the Agafay stone desert, about 40 minutes from Marrakech, for 2 hours of guided quad biking timed to finish at sunset. You ride over rocky hills and dry riverbeds with High Atlas views, stop in a Berber village for mint tea, and return to your hotel after dark.
Agafay is not a sand desert. It is a rolling landscape of stone, clay and dry hills south-west of Marrakech, with almost no vegetation and the snowy Atlas on the horizon from November to April. That makes it ideal for quad biking: the tracks are firm, varied and wide open, and you can reach it quickly from the city. In the late afternoon the hills turn gold and pink, which is why we run this trip toward sunset.
We work with an Agafay quad base that maintains its machines well and uses experienced local guides. Before you start you get a safety briefing, a helmet, goggles and a scarf, and a short practice lap. Guides ride at the front and back of the group and adapt speed to the slowest rider. Quads are automatic, so no gear changes are needed; if you have never driven one, you will be comfortable after a few minutes.
You ride about 25–30 km in total on desert tracks, climbing to viewpoints, crossing dry wadis and passing Amazigh farms. Halfway you stop in a village for mint tea and msemen with a local family. The final section reaches a ridge for sunset before riding back to base in the soft light.
October to May is best. In summer, departures move to the late afternoon, but it can still be hot and dusty; we then recommend an early morning ride instead.
