Camel caravan crossing the Merzouga dunes

This private 3-day, 2-night tour takes you from Marrakech over the High Atlas to the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga and back, in your own vehicle with an English-speaking driver. You see Aït Benhaddou, the Dades and Todra gorges, ride camels into the dunes at sunset and sleep in a desert camp.

Why private makes a difference on this route

Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, so this trip involves long days in the car. On a shared tour you follow a fixed schedule with stops chosen for the group. With your own driver you decide when to stop for photos, where to eat, and how long to stay in each place. Our drivers grew up in the south and know which viewpoints are worth the detour and which carpet shops are not.

The route

  • Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, the main road over the High Atlas, with hairpin bends and views over Amazigh villages.
  • Aït Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village where many films have been shot. A local guide shows you inside (about 100 MAD for the group).
  • Dades Valley and gorges, with the "monkey fingers" rock formations and first night in a family-run kasbah hotel.
  • Todra Gorge, where the walls rise about 300 m either side of a narrow river.
  • Erg Chebbi, dunes up to about 150 m high near Merzouga, reached by camel.

The night in the desert

You ride camels for about 1.5 hours into the dunes as the light turns orange, then climb a dune for sunset. Camps range from standard (shared bathrooms) to comfort tents with private toilet and shower; we recommend the comfort option for most guests and price it clearly before you book. Dinner is tagine around a fire, often with drumming, and on moonless nights the stars are extraordinary. At sunrise you ride or walk back to Merzouga for breakfast and a shower.

When to go

October to April is the best season. From December to February nights in the desert drop to around 0–5°C, and camps provide heavy blankets. In July and August daytime temperatures can pass 45°C, so we adjust the timings and keep outdoor activity to early morning and evening.

Practical tips from our team

  • Pack a small overnight bag for the camp; your main luggage stays in the car.
  • Bring a scarf for wind and sand, and a head torch.
  • Day 3 is the longest drive (about 9–10 hours with stops), so plan a quiet evening in Marrakech.
  • If you want more time in the dunes, we can add a second night in Merzouga.

Questions about this tour

Is 3 days enough for Merzouga from Marrakech?

Yes, but the driving is long: about 8, 6 and 10 hours on the three days including stops. If you can, a 4-day version gives you a slower pace and more time in the dunes.

What are the desert camps like?

Standard camps have beds and shared bathrooms; comfort camps have private tents with toilet and shower. We confirm which camp you get before you book.

Can I skip the camel ride?

Yes. We can drive you to the camp by 4x4 instead, which is useful for people with back problems or young children.
