Courtyard and arcades of the Ben Youssef Madrasa

This is a private 4-hour walking tour of the Marrakech medina with a licensed guide from our team, starting from your riad or hotel. You see Ben Youssef Madrasa, the craft souks, the tanneries quarter and Jemaa el-Fna, with the route adjusted to your pace and interests.

Why we suggest a guide for your first medina walk

The medina covers roughly 600 hectares of lanes, and many of them look the same on the first day. Street signs are rare, map apps lose the blue dot between high walls, and you will meet people offering to "show you the way" for a tip. Walking with one of our licensed guides means you stop worrying about direction and start noticing things: the carved cedar over a fountain, the difference between a dyers' lane and a leather lane, which shop actually makes what it sells.

The tour is private, so it is only you and your travel companions. We walk at your speed, stop for mint tea when you need it, and skip anything you do not care about. If you have mobility concerns or are travelling with children, tell us when you book and we plan a flatter, shorter loop.

What the route usually covers

  • Ben Youssef Madrasa, the 16th-century Koranic school with zellige tilework and carved stucco (entry about 50–60 MAD, paid on the day).
  • Mouassine and the craft souks: metalworkers, slipper makers, woodturners and dyers, many working in the open.
  • The tanneries quarter near Bab Debbagh, where hides are still treated in stone vats. Our guide explains the process without pushing you into a shop.
  • Jemaa el-Fna, the main square, with advice on how to enjoy it later on your own.

On request we swap stops for the Bahia Palace, the Mellah (old Jewish quarter) or the Secret Garden. Entry fees are not included so you only pay for what you choose to visit.

Shopping without pressure

We never take commission from shops and we never bring you somewhere you did not ask to go. If you want to buy a rug, lamp or leather bag, your guide gives honest price ranges before you start bargaining.

Practical tips from our team

  • Best start times are 9:00 or 15:00; from June to August we recommend the morning slot, as afternoons often pass 38°C.
  • Wear closed, comfortable shoes. The lanes are uneven and motorbikes share them with you.
  • Friday midday is quieter in the souks because many shops close for prayer.
  • Carry small notes and coins (10–20 MAD) for entry fees, tea and toilets.

If you are still deciding which area to stay in, our guide to Marrakech medina neighbourhoods explains how each quarter feels, and our one-day Marrakech plan shows how this walk fits into a full day. Message us on WhatsApp at +212 606-957514 with your dates and we will confirm a start time.

Questions about this tour

How much walking is involved on the medina tour?

Expect about 4–5 km on foot over 4 hours, with regular stops. The lanes are flat but uneven, so comfortable closed shoes are best. We can shorten the loop if needed.

Are entry fees included in the price?

No. Entry fees are paid on the day so you only pay for the monuments you choose. Ben Youssef Madrasa is about 50–60 MAD per person and the Bahia Palace around 100 MAD.

Will the guide take us to shops?

Only if you ask. We do not take commission from shops, and your guide will give you honest price ranges if you want to buy something.
