Bowl of Moroccan harira soup with traditional side dishes

This is a 3.5-hour evening food walk through the medina and Jemaa el-Fna, led by a local guide from our team who eats at these stalls. You taste around 8–10 dishes, from msemen and harira to slow-cooked tanjia and grilled kefta, with enough food to count as dinner.

Eating Marrakech after dark

When the sun goes down, the medina changes. Grills get lit, smoke rises over Jemaa el-Fna, and the tiny counters in the side lanes fill with locals on their way home. Many visitors stick to the numbered stalls in the square because they do not know where else to go. We take you to the places we eat ourselves: a tanjia cellar where clay pots cook for hours in the ashes of a hammam furnace, a msemen stand that has been folding pancakes on the same griddle for years, and a juice counter locals actually trust.

Groups are small, and your guide explains what you are eating, how it is made, and what to order again on your own later in the trip.

What you will taste

  • Msemen and harcha, flaky pancake and semolina bread, with honey or soft cheese.
  • Harira, the tomato and lentil soup Moroccan families break the fast with during Ramadan.
  • Tanjia marrakchia, beef slow-cooked with preserved lemon and cumin in a clay urn.
  • Grilled kefta and liver brochettes with cumin salt and bread.
  • Babbouche (snail soup) for the curious, served with a warming spiced broth.
  • Seasonal fruit juice, sweets and mint tea to finish.

We adapt the tastings for vegetarians, and we can avoid gluten or specific ingredients if you tell us when booking. Please mention any allergies in advance, as many stalls share oil and griddles.

Is street food in Marrakech safe?

We choose stalls with high turnover, where food is cooked hot in front of you. Bottled water is provided throughout. Most people have no problems, but if your stomach is sensitive, pace yourself and skip the salads.

Practical tips from our team

  • Tours start around 18:30 in winter and 19:30 in summer, after the heat drops.
  • Come hungry and skip a late lunch; the portions add up.
  • During Ramadan the route shifts to after iftar and the atmosphere is even livelier.
  • Wear shoes you do not mind getting a little dusty, and keep your phone in a front pocket in busy spots.

Questions about this tour

Is the food tour enough for dinner?

Yes. With 8–10 tastings, including tanjia and grilled meats, almost everyone finishes full. We suggest a light lunch that day.

Can vegetarians join the food tour?

Yes. Tell us when you book and we swap the meat dishes for vegetable tagine, lentils, bissara (fava bean soup), breads and sweets.

What time does the tour start?

Usually around 18:30 from October to April and 19:30 from May to September. During Ramadan we start after iftar, around sunset.
