Sunrise Hot Air Balloon over Marrakech

This experience lifts off at sunrise from the countryside north-east of Marrakech for a flight of about 1 hour, with views over Amazigh villages, palm groves and the High Atlas. Including hotel pickup, briefing and a Berber breakfast after landing, it takes about 4 hours in total.

Why fly at sunrise

Balloons need calm, cool air, which in Marrakech means the first hour after dawn. It is also the most beautiful time: mist in the valleys, the Atlas turning pink, and long shadows over the fields. Pickup is early, between 5:00 and 6:30 depending on the season, but most guests say it is worth the alarm clock.

Who we fly with

We book flights with a licensed balloon operator whose pilots are certified and whose balloons are inspected under Moroccan civil aviation rules. Baskets carry around 8–16 passengers, divided into compartments. Private baskets for two are available at a higher price and are popular for proposals and anniversaries.

How the morning goes

• Pickup from your hotel or riad and a 30–40 minute drive to the launch site.
• Tea, coffee and biscuits while the crew inflates the balloons with cold air, then hot air.
• Safety briefing on how to stand and how to land (you bend your knees and hold the rope handles).
• Flight of about 1 hour, rising up to 1,000 m or skimming low over villages, depending on the wind.
• Landing in open fields, often with local children running to meet the balloon.
• Berber breakfast in a tent: msemen, bread, olive oil, honey, amlou, eggs and mint tea, plus a flight certificate.

Weather and cancellations

Some flights are postponed for wind, low cloud or rain, especially in winter. The pilot decides on the morning, sometimes only at the launch site. If your flight is cancelled you choose a new date or get a full refund, so we recommend booking it early in your stay.

Practical tips from our team

• Dress in layers: it is cold before sunrise (5–10°C in winter) and warm near the burner.
• Wear flat, closed shoes; landings can be bumpy.
• Minimum age is usually 6. Pregnant travellers and people with recent back or heart problems should not fly.
• Keep your phone on a wrist strap for photos; nothing can be retrieved once dropped.
• Best months are October to May, with the clearest Atlas views from December to March.
