Our main Marrakech balloon flight tips: book early in your trip, because 10–20% of winter mornings are cancelled for wind or fog; expect pickup between about 5:00 and 6:30 depending on season; dress in layers and closed shoes; and for photos use a fast shutter (1/500 s or quicker), a wide lens and the balloon's own shadow as a subject. Flights last about an hour in the air, over the plains north or south of the city.
How a sunrise balloon morning works
We pick you up from your riad or hotel in the dark, often around 5:00 in summer and 6:00–6:30 in winter. The drive to the launch field takes 30–50 minutes, depending on where the pilots decide to fly that day. You have tea and a snack while the crew inflates the envelope with fans and burners, which is a show in itself. Then you climb into the basket, usually shared with 8–16 other passengers in divided compartments, and lift off just before or at sunrise. After roughly 45–60 minutes of flight, you land in a field, help pack up if you want, and go on to a Berber breakfast of msemmen, eggs, amlou, olive oil, fresh orange juice and mint tea. You are back in Marrakech around 10:00–11:00.
Weather: why flights are cancelled
Balloons can only fly in light, steady wind, roughly under 10–15 km/h at ground level. Pilots check the forecast the evening before and again at the launch. The main reasons for cancellation around Marrakech are:
- Wind: the most common reason, especially from November to March and on days with the Atlantic weather fronts.
- Rain or storms: rare but possible in winter and spring.
- Low visibility: dust or morning fog, mostly in the colder months.
- Chergui: the hot east wind in summer that makes the air unstable.
A good operator tells you the night before if the forecast looks doubtful, and cancels on the ground rather than risking a rough landing. When a flight is cancelled you are offered another morning or a full refund. That is why we always suggest booking on your first or second morning in Marrakech, not your last.
Best months to fly
| Period | Conditions | Approx. pickup |
|---|---|---|
| March–May | Stable mornings, green fields, snow on the Atlas until April | 5:30–6:30 |
| June–August | Very reliable, warm, sometimes hazy | 4:45–5:30 |
| September–October | Clear air, comfortable temperatures | 5:30–6:30 |
| November–February | Coldest mornings (2–8°C), sharpest views, more cancellations | 6:00–7:00 |
What to wear
It is cold on the ground at dawn and warm under the burner, so layers work best. Wear closed shoes because you land in fields, long trousers, and a jacket you can open. Bring a hat: the burner gives off serious heat just above your head. Leave large bags at the hotel, as there is little space in the basket. If you are planning outfits for the rest of the trip, our season-by-season clothing advice may help.
Photo tips from the basket
You will have about an hour of changing light, which is plenty if you prepare before takeoff.
- Charge and clear everything the night before. Cold mornings drain batteries fast; keep a spare in an inside pocket.
- Use a wrist strap. Anything you drop is gone.
- Shoot fast: 1/500 s or quicker to cancel basket movement and vibration. On a phone, lock focus and exposure on the horizon by pressing the screen.
- Go wide. A 16–35mm range (or the phone's 0.5x lens) fits the envelope, other balloons and the landscape together.
- Expose for the sky at sunrise, then brighten the shadows later. Burning out the sun is the most common mistake.
- Look down. The balloon's shadow on fields, villages and olive groves makes the most original picture of the flight.
- Film the inflation and the burner from the ground; those short clips are what friends ask to see.
- Avoid the heat shimmer. Shooting past the burner blurs the image, so move to the far corner of your compartment.
Drones are not allowed in Morocco without permits, so do not bring one.
Price and what is included
Marrakech balloon prices usually sit between about 1,400 and 2,000 MAD (€130–185) per person for a shared basket, with private baskets costing much more. Offers well below this often cut flight time or pack more people into the basket. Our sunrise hot air balloon flight is from €170 per person, including hotel pickup, the flight of about an hour, a Berber breakfast and a flight certificate. As with all our activities, you book by WhatsApp or online and pay on the day.
Who can fly?
Children are usually accepted from about 6 years old if they can see over the basket edge with help. You need to be able to climb into a basket about 1.2 m high and adopt the landing position (knees bent, holding the handles). Pregnant travellers and people with recent injuries should not fly.
Pair it with other adventures
A balloon morning leaves the afternoon free. Many guests rest by the pool, then head to Agafay for a quad ride in the desert or palm grove, or to the Palmeraie for a relaxed camel walk at golden hour. See all the options on our adventure activities overview.
Tips for the day before your flight
A little preparation saves stress at 5 a.m. Confirm the pickup point with us by WhatsApp the evening before; if your riad is in a pedestrian lane, we meet you at the nearest square or gate. Tell your riad you will miss breakfast so they do not wait for you, and ask whether they can leave the door unlocked or have someone awake. Lay out your clothes, charge your phone, and set two alarms. Avoid a late night in the medina: the drive to the launch is in the dark and you will want to be awake for the inflation. If you are travelling with someone afraid of heights, reassure them that the basket edge is chest high and the ride is very smooth; most nervous flyers relax within the first few minutes.
Etiquette in the basket
- Stay in your compartment and follow the pilot's instructions on landing.
- Do not lean far out for photos, and keep hands away from the burner lines.
- Share the best corner for a few minutes each; there is enough view for everyone.
- Crew tips are optional; around 20–50 MAD per person is common if you are happy.
Quick FAQ
Is it scary?
Most people are surprised by how calm it is. There is no wind in your face, because you move with the air. Only the burners are loud.
Can I book a private basket?
Yes, for couples or families, at a higher price. Ask us for a quote with your date.
What if my flight is cancelled on my last day?
You get a refund, but not the flight. Book early in your stay to keep a backup morning.
