For paragliding, Marrakech itself is too flat, so tandem flights take off mainly from the ridges of the Atlas foothills above Lalla Takerkoust and the Agafay plateau, about 40–60 minutes from the city. Tandem flights with a certified pilot last roughly 10–25 minutes in the air, run most of the year in the morning, and cost about 600–1,100 MAD (€55–100) depending on transport and video. No experience is needed: you run a few steps and the pilot does the rest.

Where do the flights take off?

There is no paragliding inside Marrakech itself. The city is flat, and the air above it is busy with the airport's approach. Pilots drive out to the south-west, to the hills around Aguergour and the villages above the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir, where west-facing and south-facing slopes rise 200–400 metres above the plain. From the launch you look over the Agafay desert on one side, the lake on the other and the High Atlas behind you. Landing is on a flat field near the lake or on the edge of the desert, where your driver is waiting.

Some operators also fly from sites closer to Amizmiz, and in summer a few head up towards Oukaïmeden, but for a half-day from Marrakech the Takerkoust ridges are the standard choice. It is the same area we describe in our guide to the lake and its swimming spots.

When is the best time to fly?

Morning is almost always the window. The air is calmer, visibility is clearer, and thermals have not yet become strong. In practice:

  • October to April: the most reliable months, with cool mornings and snow on the Atlas from roughly December to March.
  • May, June and September: good, but flights start early, around 7:30–9:00.
  • July and August: possible at dawn only; by late morning the heat makes the air rough.
  • Chergui days: when the hot, dusty east wind blows, flights are cancelled or moved.

Late-afternoon flights sometimes run in winter when the wind is gentle, and the light over Agafay is lovely, but your pilot makes the final call on the day.

How does a tandem flight work?

We collect you from your riad or hotel, then drive about 45–60 minutes to the launch. The pilot explains the takeoff in five minutes: harness on, helmet on, a few firm steps downhill, and keep running until your feet leave the ground. Once airborne, you sit back in a harness that feels like an armchair. If you want, the pilot will let you hold the brakes for a moment or will do a few gentle spirals at the end. Landing is on your feet or, more often, sliding on your bottom. The whole outing takes about a half day, with tea and time for photos.

Flight time and altitude

Expect roughly 10–25 minutes of flying, sometimes longer on a good thermal day. Pilots typically climb a few hundred metres above takeoff. You are not going to reach cloud base on a tandem discovery flight, and that is fine: the view over the lake and desert is the point.

Is paragliding in Morocco safe?

This is the question most people really want answered. Tandem paragliding has a good safety record when three things are true: the pilot holds a recognised tandem qualification, the equipment is maintained and includes a reserve parachute, and the pilot is willing to cancel. Morocco does not have the same regulatory framework as France or Switzerland, so it is worth asking directly. Here is our checklist:

  1. Ask which licence the pilot holds (for example a tandem rating from a national federation or an international body).
  2. Check that the harness has a reserve parachute and that you get a helmet.
  3. Ask whether passengers are insured for the flight.
  4. Be happy, not annoyed, if the pilot waits or cancels because of wind. That is a sign of a good operator.

We only work with pilots who hold a tandem qualification, fly with a reserve and are willing to cancel when conditions are wrong. If a flight is called off, we offer another morning or you do not pay.

Weight, age and health limits

RequirementTypical rule
Passenger weightAbout 20–110 kg; heavier passengers depend on wind and wing size
AgeChildren from around 6–8 with a parent's consent; no upper limit if mobile
FitnessYou need to run 5–10 steps on a slope
Not suitablePregnancy, recent surgery, serious back or heart problems

Prices in 2026

On the market you will see tandem flights from about 600 MAD for the flight only, up to 1,100 MAD or more with hotel transfers and a GoPro video. Our tandem paragliding half day in the Atlas foothills is from €90 per person, including free pickup in Marrakech and the return drive. Video is optional; ask the pilot on the day. There is no online prepayment.

What to wear

  • Trainers or hiking shoes with grip for the takeoff run.
  • Long trousers and a windproof layer: it is 5–8°C cooler in the air.
  • Sunglasses with a strap, and nothing loose in your pockets.

Combine it with other adventures

Paragliding fits well with a quiet afternoon at the lake, or with a longer adventure day. If you would rather stay closer to the ground, the zipline park at zipline park near Tahanaout offers a similar mountain view with a harness but no flying. For a softer option, read our tips for a sunrise balloon flight over the Marrakech plains. You can browse everything on our adventure tours from Marrakech page.

A realistic timeline for your paragliding morning

  • 07:00–08:00: pickup from your riad or hotel (earlier in summer).
  • 08:00–09:00: arrival at the launch, briefing, harness and helmet fitting.
  • 09:00–10:30: flights, one passenger at a time if you are a group, with tea while you wait.
  • 11:00–12:30: back in Marrakech, or on to the lake for lunch.

Wind can shift the plan by an hour either way. Pilots sometimes wait at the launch for the breeze to settle rather than fly in marginal air, so bring patience along with your sunglasses. If you are travelling as a group of mixed confidence, we usually suggest that the most relaxed person flies first; watching a calm takeoff and landing does more for nervous friends than any briefing.

Quick FAQ

Do I need any experience?

None. You listen to a short briefing, run a few steps, and the pilot controls the wing for the whole flight.

What happens if it's too windy?

The pilot waits at the launch or cancels. We then offer another morning during your stay, which is why we suggest booking early in your trip.

Can I get motion sickness?

Some people do, mainly during spirals. Tell the pilot and they will keep the flight smooth.

Book your flight
