An Agafay desert camp is a tented camp on the stony Agafay plateau, about 35–40 km (40–50 minutes) south-west of Marrakech. A night usually includes a sunset, a three-course Moroccan dinner, music by the fire, a tent with a proper bed and breakfast. Prices range from roughly 700–1,200 MAD per person for simple camps to 2,500 MAD and more in luxury camps with pools. It is a rocky desert, not sand dunes.
Where is Agafay, and what does it look like?
Agafay is a high, dry plateau between Marrakech and the High Atlas, beyond the village of Tameslouht. The ground is bare rock and gravel shaped into soft hills and dry riverbeds, with almost no vegetation. From many camps you see the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir and, from about November to April, snow on the Atlas peaks. People call it the “Marrakech desert”, and it genuinely feels remote at night, but it is not the Sahara. If your heart is set on dunes, look at Merzouga or Zagora; our notes on the Sahara in winter will help if you plan that later.
Types of camps and prices
| Camp type | What you get | Approx. price per person (half board) |
|---|---|---|
| Simple / standard | Berber-style tent, beds, shared bathrooms, dinner and breakfast | 700–1,200 MAD (€65–110) |
| Comfort | Private tent with en-suite bathroom, heater or fan, sometimes a pool | 1,200–2,500 MAD (€110–230) |
| Luxury / boutique | Large designed tents or domes, pools, spa, fine dining | 2,500 MAD+ (€230+) |
Transfers from Marrakech usually cost extra unless included in a package, and weekends and holidays fill the popular camps early.
What a typical evening looks like
- Late afternoon: pickup from your riad, 40–50 minutes' drive, then check-in and mint tea.
- Before sunset: an activity if you want one, such as a quad ride, a camel walk or simply a walk up the nearest hill.
- Sunset: the hills turn pink and orange; this is the photo moment.
- Dinner: usually salads, a tagine or couscous, fruit and pastries, often served in a large tent or outside with lanterns.
- Evening: a fire with Gnawa or Amazigh drums in many camps, then stargazing.
- Morning: sunrise over the Atlas, breakfast with msemmen, eggs, jams and coffee, and back in Marrakech by late morning.
Adding an activity before dinner
The most popular combination is a ride just before sunset. Our Agafay desert quad ride at sunset is from €55 per person with pickup from your hotel, and it can be arranged so that you continue to your camp afterwards instead of driving back. If you prefer something calmer, our guide to camel rides in Agafay and the Palmeraie explains the short desert rides, and the quad routes guide covers terrain and timing in more detail.
Weather and the best season
- October–November and March–May: the best months, with warm days (22–30°C) and comfortable nights.
- December–February: clear skies and snowy Atlas views, but nights drop to 2–6°C. Choose a camp with heated tents or extra blankets.
- June–September: very hot days (often 38–45°C), pleasant nights; camps with pools make sense.
Stars are best around the new moon. Agafay is close enough to Marrakech that the city glows faintly on one horizon, so the Milky Way is visible but not as bright as in the deep Sahara.
What to pack
- A warm layer and long trousers for the evening, even in spring.
- Closed shoes for walking on stones; flip-flops for the tent.
- A head torch for paths between tents.
- Swimwear if your camp has a pool.
- Power bank; some camps have limited sockets.
- A small overnight bag; leave the big suitcase at your riad.
Agafay vs a Sahara camp
Agafay is perfect if you have limited time: no long drive, one night, back for lunch in Marrakech. The Sahara needs at least two days, but gives you real dunes, deeper silence and darker skies. Many travellers do Agafay on a short trip and save Merzouga for their next visit.
Is it good for families and couples?
Both. Children enjoy the open space, the fire and the animals, and many camps have family tents. Couples often choose Agafay for an anniversary dinner or the last night of a honeymoon. Browse our other outdoor ideas on the Marrakech adventure activities page.
How to choose the right camp
Camps in Agafay range from a handful of simple tents to designer retreats, and photos online can look very similar. Before booking, we suggest you check these points:
- Private bathroom or shared? This is the biggest difference in comfort, especially on cold winter nights.
- Heating and bedding. From December to February, ask whether tents have heaters or extra blankets.
- Noise. Some camps host large groups and parties with loud music; others keep it quiet. Ask what a typical evening sounds like.
- Distance from the road. Camps deeper into the plateau feel more remote but take longer to reach on a rough track.
- What is included. Dinner drinks, activities and transfers are often extra; ask for the full price per person.
Alcohol is served in some camps and not others, so check if it matters to you. Vegetarian meals are easy to arrange with notice. If you have mobility concerns, ask for a tent close to the main dining area, as paths between tents are uneven gravel.
Sleeping well in the desert
Desert nights are very quiet, apart from dogs in distant villages. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper, and zip the tent fully to keep out moths drawn to the lights. Mornings are the most magical part for many guests, so set an alarm for sunrise.
Quick FAQ
Is there Wi-Fi and hot water?
Most comfort and luxury camps have hot showers; Wi-Fi is often limited to the main tent. Simple camps may have neither.
Can I visit for dinner only?
Yes, many camps offer sunset and dinner packages with a return to Marrakech around 22:00–23:00.
Is it safe?
Yes. Camps are staffed all night, and Agafay is a calm rural area.
