A private driver in Morocco typically costs around €80–150 per vehicle for a full day around Marrakech and €100–180 per day on multi-day routes, depending on the vehicle, season and distance. Fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's own meals and lodging are usually included; entrance fees, guides, your meals and tips are not.

Why travellers hire a driver instead of renting a car

Morocco's motorways are good, but a lot of what you come for is off them: mountain passes, oasis tracks, village markets, the approach to the dunes. We drive these roads every week, and the honest answer is that a local driver saves you time, stress and a few wrong turns. You also avoid police checkpoints in a language you may not speak, medina parking puzzles, and the long drive back after a big day.

A driver also changes how the day feels. You can stop when you see a roadside argan stall, ask what a sign says, or take a detour to a kasbah that is not in your guidebook.

Private driver Morocco prices in 2026

Prices vary with vehicle, distance and season (Easter, October half-term and Christmas are busiest). These are realistic market ranges per vehicle, not per person:

VehicleSeatsFull day around MarrakechPer day on a multi-day route
Sedan (e.g. Skoda, Dacia)1–3€80–120 (about 850–1,300 MAD)€100–150
Minivan (e.g. Mercedes Vito)4–7€100–150€120–180
4x4 (e.g. Toyota Land Cruiser)1–4€120–170€140–200
Minibus8–16€150–220€170–250

Split between a family or a group of friends, a minivan often works out cheaper than two rental cars plus fuel and parking. Our own private driver day from Marrakech starts from €60 per person for up to 10 hours, with free pickup from your hotel or riad.

What is usually included (and what is not)

Normally included

  • The vehicle, fuel, motorway tolls and parking.
  • Your driver's time for an agreed number of hours per day (commonly 8–10).
  • On multi-day trips, the driver's meals and accommodation.
  • Bottled water in the car.

Normally not included

  • Entrance fees (for example Aït Benhaddou, Volubilis or palace tickets, usually 30–100 MAD each).
  • Licensed local guides inside medinas and monuments.
  • Your own meals, hotels, camel rides or activities, unless quoted as a package.
  • Tips.

Always ask for a written list of inclusions before you confirm. A clear quote avoids awkward conversations at the end.

Driver or guide? The licensing difference

In Morocco, drivers and guides hold different licences. A driver holds a tourist transport authorisation and can talk to you about the landscape, the villages and daily life along the road. Inside the medinas of Marrakech and Fes, or at big monuments, only a licensed official guide can lead you. A good private-driver itinerary builds this in: your driver brings you to the gate, a local guide takes you through, and the driver meets you again afterwards.

  • Day trips from Marrakech: Ourika and the Atlas valleys (1–1.5 hours each way), Essaouira (about 2.5–3 hours), Ouzoud (about 2.5–3 hours), Aït Benhaddou via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (about 3.5–4 hours).
  • The Sahara loop: Marrakech to Merzouga is roughly 550–580 km and 9–10 hours of driving, best split over two days via the Dades Gorges.
  • The imperial cities: Marrakech to Fes is around 6–7 hours via the motorway, or longer through the Middle Atlas cedar forests.

If you only have a short week, our comparison of two five-day routes from Marrakech shows how much driving each plan really involves.

Tips for a good trip with your driver

  1. Keep daily driving under 6–7 hours where you can. It leaves time to stop and enjoy the places you pass.
  2. Share your pace. Tell your driver if you prefer early starts, long lunches or plenty of photo stops.
  3. Say no to shops you do not want. A professional driver will respect it. If you are curious about a cooperative, it is fine to visit with no obligation to buy.
  4. Sit up front on mountain roads if you get car-sick; the Tichka pass has plenty of bends.
  5. Carry small notes for toilets, parking attendants and snacks.

Questions to ask before you book

Whoever you hire, a few questions up front tell you a lot about how the trip will go:

  • Is the price per vehicle or per person? Both models exist in Morocco, so check which one you are being quoted.
  • How many hours are included each day, and what happens if you run late?
  • Which vehicle exactly, and is it air-conditioned? In July and August, inland temperatures around Ouarzazate and Marrakech regularly pass 40°C.
  • Are the hotels included, or only transport? For multi-day routes, riads and desert camps can be booked separately or as a package.
  • How do I pay? With us there is no online prepayment; you confirm by WhatsApp or through the website and settle locally.

Also ask whether child seats are available if you travel with young children; it is worth reserving them rather than assuming.

Tipping your driver

Tips are not obligatory but are warmly appreciated. As a guideline, around 150–200 MAD for a full day and 100–150 MAD per day on a longer trip, per booking party, handed over at the end. Our full guide to tipping in Morocco covers guides, riad staff and restaurants too.

Quick FAQ

Is it safe to travel with a private driver in Morocco?

Yes, when you book through a registered company with licensed drivers and insured vehicles. Ask for the vehicle type and driver's name in advance, and check that seat belts work in every row.

Can I change the itinerary once the trip has started?

Usually, within reason. Small detours are easy; adding a lot of extra kilometres may change the price, so agree it before the day starts.

Do drivers speak English?

Many do, alongside Arabic, Darija, French and often Amazigh (Berber). If English matters to you, mention it when you book.
