Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is only about 6 km from the medina, a 15–25 minute drive. A petit taxi should cost roughly 70–120 MAD by day (drivers often open at 150–200 MAD), the L19 airport bus costs around 30 MAD, and a pre-booked private transfer that meets you inside arrivals starts from about €15 per person.
Marrakech airport to medina: how far is it?
Menara is one of the closest airports to a city centre you will find anywhere in Morocco. From the terminal to Bab Jdid or Jemaa el-Fna it is around 6 km, and outside rush hour you will be at the medina walls in 15–20 minutes. Late-afternoon traffic on Avenue de la Menara can stretch that to 30 minutes, but rarely more.
The catch is the final stretch. Most riads sit in lanes too narrow for cars, so every option below drops you at the nearest gate or square, and you walk the last 2–10 minutes with your bags. We come back to that below, because it is where most first-time arrivals get flustered.
Your options at a glance
| Option | Approximate cost (2026) | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petit taxi from the rank | 70–120 MAD by day, 100–180 MAD at night (about €7–17) | 15–25 min | Light packers who are happy to negotiate |
| L19 airport bus | around 30 MAD one way (about €3) | 30–40 min | Solo budget travellers staying near Jemaa el-Fna or Gueliz |
| Private transfer | from €15 per person | 15–25 min plus walk to the riad | Families, late arrivals, anyone staying deep in the medina |
Taking a taxi from Marrakech airport
Once you clear customs and walk out of arrivals, the taxi rank is directly ahead. You will see beige petit taxis (up to three passengers, city limits only) and larger grand taxis, often older Mercedes or Dacia vans, which can take up to six people and plenty of luggage.
What a fair fare looks like
There is an official board with fixed airport fares, but meters are rarely switched on for this route. In practice, a fair daytime price to the medina gates is around 70–120 MAD per car, not per person. Expect a first quote of 150–200 MAD, especially if you look tired or it is late. Agree the price before you load bags, say clearly which gate or square you want, and have small notes ready, because change is often "not available".
Night arrivals
After about 8 pm fares go up by roughly 50%, which is legitimate. Many flights from the UK and Europe land between 10 pm and 1 am, when the rank has fewer cars and more bargaining power sits with the drivers. This is the moment a pre-booked pickup earns its keep.
The L19 airport bus
The L19 (run by the city bus operator ALSA) stops just outside the terminal and loops through Gueliz and Hivernage to Jemaa el-Fna. A one-way ticket is around 30 MAD, bought from the driver, and a return ticket is usually a little cheaper per leg if you are flying out within about two weeks. Buses run roughly every 20–30 minutes from early morning until around 9–11 pm, depending on the season, so always check the timetable posted at the stop.
It is a comfortable, air-conditioned option if you travel light. With big suitcases, children or a riad far from the square, the saving compared with a taxi shrinks quickly once you add the walk.
Private transfer: what is actually included
With our private airport transfer to your riad or hotel, a driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign, follows your flight number so delays are covered, and takes you straight to your accommodation. Prices start from €15 per person, and you pay on arrival, with no online prepayment. For medina riads we drive to the closest point and walk you to the door, or we coordinate with the riad so someone meets you at the gate.
A transfer makes the most sense if:
- You land after dark or after a long delay.
- You are travelling with children, older relatives or lots of luggage.
- Your riad is deep in the lanes around Mouassine, Kasbah or Riad Zitoun.
- You would rather not start the holiday by negotiating in French or Darija.
Getting to a riad in the medina
This is the part nobody warns you about. Cars stop at gates like Bab Doukkala, Bab Ksiba or Bab Laksour, or at Place des Ferblantiers near the Kasbah. From there, young men with handcarts offer to carry bags; the going rate is around 20–50 MAD depending on distance, and it is fair to agree it before they start. Ask your riad for a shared location pin and, ideally, for staff to meet you. If you are still choosing a base, our guide to choosing between a medina riad, Gueliz or Hivernage explains which areas are easy to reach by car.
Money and phone before you leave the terminal
Two things to sort out in the arrivals hall: dirhams and data. There are ATMs and exchange desks after baggage reclaim, and the three mobile operators have booths in the same area. Airport exchange rates are generally regulated and close to city rates. If you want to thank a helpful porter or driver, our guide to tipping in Morocco gives realistic amounts.
Common arrival mistakes to avoid
- Not agreeing the fare first. Once bags are in the boot, your leverage is gone.
- Giving a riad name, not a landmark. Drivers may not know small riads. Name a gate or square.
- Following a helpful stranger. In the lanes, someone may offer to guide you and then ask for money or lead you to a shop. Politely decline and use your riad's pin.
- Arriving with only large notes. A 200 MAD note for a 100 MAD ride can become a debate.
Quick FAQ
Is there Uber at Marrakech airport?
Ride-hailing apps exist in Marrakech, but airport pickups are patchy, waits can be long and in-app card payment does not always work. Do not rely on an app as your only plan, especially at night.
How much is a taxi from Marrakech airport to Jemaa el-Fna?
By day, expect to pay around 70–120 MAD per car after agreeing the price; at night, roughly 100–180 MAD. Fares are per vehicle, not per person.
Can a taxi drive to my riad's door?
Usually not. Most of the medina is closed to cars, so you will be dropped at the nearest gate or square and walk the last few minutes.
