In this guide
If you are wondering where to stay in Marrakech on a first visit, stay in a riad inside the medina, ideally in Mouassine, Riad Zitoun or the Kasbah, so you can walk to the sights and soak up the atmosphere. Choose Gueliz if you want modern cafés, easier taxis and cheaper apartments, and Hivernage if you want a large hotel with a pool and quiet evenings, 10–20 minutes' walk from Jemaa el-Fna.
The short version
Almost every guest we pick up asks us where they should have stayed, and the honest answer depends on how you like to travel. The medina gives you character and walkability. Gueliz gives you convenience and a local, modern city feel. Hivernage gives you space, pools and calm. Outside these, the Palmeraie and the Agafay area suit people who want a resort and do not mind a 20–40 minute drive into town.
| Area | Best for | Typical double room (approx.) | Downsides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medina riad | First-timers, couples, atmosphere | €50–€250 per night | Cars cannot reach the door, steep stairs, some noise from the call to prayer |
| Gueliz | Independent travellers, longer stays, nightlife | €40–€150 (hotels and apartments) | Less "exotic", 25–35 min walk to the medina |
| Hivernage | Families, pool lovers, business travellers | €90–€400+ | Resort bubble, higher restaurant prices |
| Palmeraie | Resorts, golf, big villas | €100–€500+ | Taxi needed for everything, 20–30 min to the medina |
Staying in a medina riad
A riad is a traditional house built around an inner courtyard, often with a small plunge pool and a roof terrace. Most have 3 to 10 rooms, so the service is personal and breakfast on the terrace is a highlight. From a medina riad you can walk to Jemaa el-Fna, the souks and the palaces, and come back for a rest in the heat of the afternoon.
Which part of the medina?
- Mouassine: central, stylish, close to the souks and Le Jardin Secret.
- Riad Zitoun: easy to navigate, a short walk to the Bahia Palace.
- Kasbah: quieter, near the Saadian Tombs, and taxis can get closer.
- Bab Doukkala: local and good value, a little further out.
If these names are new to you, our local's map of the medina neighbourhoods explains each one.
Things to know before booking a riad
Cars cannot enter most medina lanes, so taxis stop at the nearest gate or square and a porter with a handcart (usually 20–50 MAD tip) walks your bags in. Rooms open onto the courtyard, so sound travels. Ask whether the riad has air conditioning and heating: medina nights from December to February can drop to 5°C, and summer days reach 40°C. Check the riad's reviews for how well it can be found; the best ones send someone to meet you.
Gueliz: the modern centre
Gueliz was built during the French protectorate and is now the city's commercial district. Avenue Mohammed V links it to the Koutoubia in a straight 2 km line. Here you find apartment rentals, mid-range hotels, supermarkets, wine bars, the Menara Mall and good independent restaurants. It is also a short taxi ride (around 15–20 minutes' walk) to the Jardin Majorelle, and petit taxis are easy to flag. A petit taxi from Gueliz to Jemaa el-Fna should cost roughly 20–30 MAD by day on the meter, with a surcharge after about 20:00.
Gueliz suits people staying a week or more, remote workers and anyone who finds the medina's intensity tiring. The trade-off is that it feels like a normal modern city rather than an old one.
Hivernage: hotels and quiet
Hivernage sits between Gueliz and the medina walls, next to the Menara gardens. It is a neighbourhood of big hotels, wide avenues, landscaped gardens, the Palais des Congrès and several of the city's clubs. You get large pools, spas and kids' clubs, and you can still walk to the Koutoubia in 10–20 minutes. It is our usual recommendation for families with small children or anyone who needs step-free access.
Palmeraie, Agafay and the outskirts
The Palmeraie, about 7 km north-east of the medina, is a palm grove dotted with villas, golf courses and resort hotels. Agafay, roughly 40 minutes south-west, has desert-style camps and eco-lodges with views of the Atlas. Both are wonderful for a slower stay, but you will depend on shuttles, taxis or a driver to reach the city. Many travellers split their stay: a few nights in a medina riad, then a few nights by a big pool.
Getting there from the airport
Marrakech Menara Airport is only about 6 km from the medina, so every area on this list is a short drive away: roughly 15–25 minutes to the medina gates, Gueliz or Hivernage, and 25–35 minutes to the Palmeraie. Airport taxis often ask 150–250 MAD depending on the time of day, so agree the fare before you get in or arrange a transfer with your accommodation. If you arrive late at night and are staying in a medina riad, a pre-arranged meeting point with a porter makes a big difference.
How to choose: our quick rules
- Two or three nights, first visit: medina riad, no question.
- Travelling with a pram or reduced mobility: Hivernage or a riad close to a taxi drop-off in the Kasbah.
- A week or longer: mix a riad with Gueliz or the Palmeraie.
- Nightlife and bars: Gueliz or Hivernage; alcohol is rarer inside the medina.
- Tight budget: simple medina riads or Gueliz apartments give the best value.
Quick FAQ
Is it better to stay in a riad or a hotel in Marrakech?
For atmosphere and walking access, a riad. For large pools, lifts and kids' facilities, a hotel in Hivernage or the Palmeraie.
Is Gueliz within walking distance of the medina?
Yes, Jemaa el-Fna is about 25–35 minutes on foot down Avenue Mohammed V, or 10 minutes by petit taxi.
Can a taxi drop me at my riad door?
Usually not. Taxis stop at the nearest accessible point; ask your riad to send someone to meet you there.
