In this guide
A Morocco honeymoon works best as a private 7–9 day loop: two or three nights in a Marrakech riad, a night in the Atlas or Dades Valley, one or two nights in a Sahara desert camp near Merzouga, and a slow finish on the Essaouira coast. The most comfortable months are March–May and late September–November.
Why Morocco suits a honeymoon
We plan a lot of trips for couples, and the thing they tell us they remember is contrast. One evening you are on a rooftop above the medina with the call to prayer drifting across the city, two days later you are sitting on a dune with nothing around you but sand and a sky full of stars. Distances are manageable from Marrakech, direct flights from most of Europe take three to four hours, and private travel means the pace is yours, not a group's.
When to go
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| March–May | Warm days (22–30°C in Marrakech), green Atlas valleys, almond and orange blossom. Our favourite window for a honeymoon. |
| June–August | Hot inland (often 38–45°C), cooler on the coast. Possible, but plan the desert carefully. |
| September–November | Pleasant days, fewer crowds after mid-October, date harvest in the oases. |
| December–February | Sunny, crisp days; desert nights near freezing and snow on the High Atlas. Very clear skies for stargazing. |
If your dates fall in February or March 2027, check our note on travelling in Morocco during Ramadan, which is expected to start around 8 February. It is a lovely time to visit, but daytime rhythms change.
An 8-day romantic Morocco honeymoon itinerary
Days 1–2: Marrakech, slowly
Arrive, get collected at the airport, and settle into a riad with a plunge pool or a quiet rooftop. On the first full day, explore the medina with a licensed guide in the morning, when the lanes are cooler, then spend the afternoon at a hammam and dinner on a terrace. If you have never landed in Marrakech before, our guide to getting from the airport to your riad takes the stress out of the first hour.
Day 3: Over the Atlas to Aït Benhaddou
Cross the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), roughly 3.5–4 hours with stops, and walk up through the fortified village of Aït Benhaddou in late-afternoon light. Stay in a kasbah guesthouse in the valley.
Day 4: Dades Gorges and the Valley of Roses
Continue through Skoura's palm groves and the Valley of Roses (the rose festival in Kelaat M'Gouna usually runs in May) to the Dades Gorges, where you sleep in a quiet hotel facing the rock walls.
Days 5–6: The Sahara at Merzouga
Drive via the Todra Gorge to the Erg Chebbi dunes, around 5–6 hours. Ride camels at sunset to a private tented camp: for a honeymoon, we recommend a camp with en-suite tents and a proper bed. The second night is where the magic happens, with no rush to leave. Moon phases make a real difference to the stars; our Sahara stargazing guide helps you pick the right nights.
Day 7: The long road back
Merzouga to Marrakech is around 9–10 hours of driving, so many couples break it with a night in Ouarzazate or fly from Errachidia or Ouarzazate instead. We plan whichever works for your flight.
Day 8: Essaouira or a last Marrakech day
Either finish with a sunrise balloon flight over the palm groves, or head 2.5–3 hours west to Essaouira for fresh fish at the port, ramparts at sunset and a slower pace. If you have nine or ten days, give Essaouira two nights.
Our 8-day private tour through cities, desert and coast follows this kind of route and starts from €890 per person; we adjust nights, hotels and pace to what you both want.
Romantic extras worth adding
- Sunrise hot-air balloon over the Marrakech palm groves, with breakfast after landing.
- Private hammam for two, with black soap scrub and argan massage.
- Dinner on the dunes or on a riad roof with lanterns.
- A night in an Agafay desert camp if you are short on time for Merzouga, just 40 minutes from Marrakech.
- Cooking class in a riad, then eat what you made.
How much does a Morocco honeymoon cost?
Budgets vary most with where you sleep. As a rough guide for two people in 2026:
- Boutique riads in Marrakech: about €90–250 per night; high-end riads and palace hotels go well beyond.
- Private desert camps with en-suite tents: roughly €150–350 per night for two, including dinner and breakfast.
- A private driver and vehicle for a multi-day route: typically €100–180 per day per vehicle.
Our guide to hiring a private driver in Morocco explains what these day rates include.
Choosing where to sleep
Where you stay shapes a honeymoon more than anything else. In Marrakech, a small riad of five to eight rooms feels private and personal; look for a room opening onto the roof terrace rather than the courtyard, which can be noisy. In the Dades and around Aït Benhaddou, kasbah guesthouses with pisé walls and valley views are warm and atmospheric. In the desert, ask how far tents are from each other, whether they have private bathrooms and hot water, and whether dinner can be served just for the two of you.
Practical notes for couples
Tell your riads and camp you are on honeymoon when you book; many will prepare the room with rose petals or a small welcome. Public displays of affection are best kept low-key, especially in rural areas. Pack a warm layer for desert nights at any time of year and a scarf for sun and dust.
Quick FAQ
How many days do you need for a Morocco honeymoon?
Seven to nine days lets you combine Marrakech, the Sahara and the coast without feeling rushed. With five days, choose either the desert or the coast, not both.
Is Morocco a good honeymoon destination in winter?
Yes, if you like crisp sunny days and cosy evenings by a fire. Desert nights can drop below 5°C, so pick a camp with good bedding and heating.
Can we customise the route?
Always. Every private trip we run can be changed: add a night, swap a city, or upgrade a hotel.
