Essaouira kitesurfing relies on the strong north-easterly trade wind (locally the alizé), which blows most reliably from April to September, often 18–30 knots in the afternoon. Beginners learn in the wide bay at Essaouira beach, while Sidi Kaouki, 25 km south, suits wave riding and more experienced kiters. Lessons cost roughly €50–70 per hour, and a wetsuit is needed all year.

Why Essaouira is so windy

Morocco's Atlantic coast sits in the path of the trade winds, and Essaouira's position on a slight headland funnels them. Locals call the town "the wind city", and it earns the name: from spring to late summer the wind builds after late morning and blows hard until sunset. It keeps the town cooler than Marrakech (often 22–27 °C in July while Marrakech sits near 40 °C) but it also means that lying on the beach can feel like being sandblasted. Knowing this before you go makes the difference between loving Essaouira and being disappointed by it.

Wind and water by season

MonthsWindWater temp.Best for
April–SeptemberStrong and regular, 18–30 knots most afternoons18–21 °CKitesurfing, windsurfing, wing foil
October–NovemberMore variable, calmer days19–20 °CMix of kite days and surf
December–MarchLighter wind, bigger Atlantic swells16–18 °CSurfing, especially at Sidi Kaouki

A 4/3 mm wetsuit is standard most of the year, with a 3/2 mm enough on warm summer days. The Canary Current keeps the ocean cooler than people expect.

Essaouira beach: the learning bay

The main beach runs south from the medina walls for several kilometres. Its southern end, towards the ruined fort of Borj El Berod and the village of Diabat, has wide, flat water and sandy bottom, which is ideal for learning. Several schools operate from the beach with IKO-certified instructors and rescue boats. Walking and camel rides share the sand, so kiting zones are separated from the swimming area near town.

What lessons cost in 2026

  • Discovery lesson (2–3 hours): roughly €100–150, including equipment.
  • Private lesson: roughly €50–70 per hour.
  • Beginner course (10–12 hours): roughly €350–450, often with IKO certification.
  • Equipment rental for independent riders: around €50–70 per day, with weekly discounts.
  • Surf lessons: from about €20–35 for a group session with board and wetsuit.

Sidi Kaouki: the wilder beach

Sidi Kaouki is a small village about 25 km (30 minutes) south of Essaouira, built around a white marabout shrine above a long, open beach. The wind here is often a little cross-shore and the Atlantic swell arrives unfiltered, so it suits intermediate kiters, wave riders and surfers. In winter it is one of the region's best surf spots. There are a handful of guesthouses, surf schools and cafés, and very little else. That emptiness is the charm.

A good plan for experienced riders is to stay in Essaouira and drive to Sidi Kaouki on days when the swell is right. Beginners should stay in the bay.

If you are not a kiter: enjoying the beaches anyway

  • Go to the beach in the morning, before the wind builds.
  • Take a camel or horse ride along the sand towards Diabat in late afternoon.
  • Watch the kiters from a café terrace on the promenade.
  • Spend the windy hours inside the medina walls: the Skala ramparts, the fishing port, and the woodcarvers' workshops.

The drive from Marrakech also passes through argan country; we explain what to look for in our guide to argan oil cooperatives on the Essaouira road.

Day trip or overnight?

Essaouira is about 190 km from Marrakech, 2 h 45 min to 3 h each way. As a day trip, you get around five hours on the coast: enough for the medina, the port, a fish lunch and a walk on the beach, or a short discovery kite or surf lesson if you book it ahead. For a real kitesurfing course, stay at least three to five nights; the wind is reliable but not guaranteed every single day.

Our Essaouira coastal day trip leaves Marrakech early and returns in the evening, and we can drop you at a kite school on arrival if you have booked a lesson. If you would rather stay inland, compare other ideas in our list of excursions from Marrakech, or pick something shorter from our half-day trip ideas.

Practical tips for the coast

  • Bring a windproof jacket even in August; evenings are cool.
  • Sunscreen matters more than it feels like it does; the wind hides the burn.
  • Book lessons a day or two ahead in July and August, when schools fill up.
  • Fish lunch at the port grills costs roughly 100–200 MAD per person; agree the price by weight before cooking.

Where to stay for a kite or surf trip

Inside the medina you get character, riads with roof terraces and everything within walking distance, but you carry gear through narrow lanes to reach the beach. The newer district south of the walls, along the promenade, puts you a few minutes from the kite schools. Sidi Kaouki has simple guesthouses and surf houses right on the sand, ideal if you want to be in the water at first light and do not mind quiet evenings. Prices range from about €15–25 a night in a hostel to €60–120 for a comfortable riad room, higher in July and August. Many schools offer packages combining lessons, equipment and accommodation, which is worth comparing if you plan to stay a week.

Quick FAQ

When is the best month for Essaouira kitesurfing?

June to August has the most consistent wind, with April, May and September close behind and less crowded.

Is Sidi Kaouki good for beginners?

For surfing lessons on small days, yes. For kitesurfing, beginners are safer in the flatter water of Essaouira bay.

Can I try kitesurfing on a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes, a 2–3 hour discovery lesson fits into a day trip if booked in advance, but you will not be riding independently after one session.
