Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate is one of the largest film studios in the world by area, about 190 km (4–4.5 hours) from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. It opens daily from around 8:30 until sunset, and a guided tour of the main sets costs roughly 80–110 MAD. Most visitors see it as part of a multi-day desert trip rather than a day trip.

What Atlas Film Studios is

Founded in 1983 on the edge of Ouarzazate, Atlas Studios grew from one production into a huge open-air lot on the stony plain west of town. The dry climate, reliable light and nearby kasbahs have drawn filmmakers for decades, and Ouarzazate still calls itself the "Hollywood of Africa". Productions shot here, in part or in whole, include The Jewel of the Nile, Kundun, The Mummy, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra. Sets are often left standing after filming and reused, repainted or partly dismantled, so what you see changes over the years.

What you see on the tour

The guided walk takes you through a series of sets, each with a story about the film and its stars. Highlights usually include:

  • The Egyptian temple and giant statues built for historical epics, including a large sphinx-like figure and painted columns.
  • The Tibetan monastery from Kundun, rebuilt here because filming in Tibet was impossible.
  • Jerusalem street sets used in biblical and Crusades-era films.
  • Chariots, fibreglass props and a small aircraft from action films.
  • Behind the façades: the plywood, scaffolding and polystyrene reveal how thin the illusion really is, which is half the fun.

Honestly, some areas look weathered and a few props are faded by the sun. If you love cinema, it is fascinating; if not, it is a pleasant hour and a good break in a long drive.

Other film sites around Ouarzazate

The CLA Studios on the opposite side of town are sometimes open to visitors, and the Cinema Museum in the town centre displays old sets and equipment. Aït Benhaddou, 30 km away, is the most famous filming location of all, used in Gladiator and many others.

Getting there from Marrakech

The road to Ouarzazate crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m. It is a good road with many hairpins and wide mountain scenery, but it takes 4–4.5 hours without stops, and closer to 5 with photo breaks. Snow occasionally closes the pass for a few hours between December and February.

A day trip to Ouarzazate and back means 9 hours of driving, which we do not recommend. The better options are:

  1. A night in Ouarzazate or Aït Benhaddou on a two-day loop.
  2. A desert tour that passes through, such as our 4-day Sahara and kasbahs loop, where the studios become a stop on day one.
  3. A private driver for a longer itinerary tailored around film locations.

If you want to see the Skoura palm grove on the same route, our colleagues' guide to Skoura oasis and Kasbah Amridil explains that stop.

A few practical details

  • Location: the studios sit on the N9 about 4–5 km west of Ouarzazate centre, directly on the road coming from Marrakech, so you pass the entrance before reaching town.
  • On-site extras: there is a café and a souvenir shop at the entrance, and the studio runs a hotel next door.
  • Accessibility: paths are mostly flat gravel and packed earth, manageable with care for people with limited mobility, though some sets involve steps.
  • Tipping: the guided tour is included in the ticket, but a tip of 20–50 MAD per group for a good guide is appreciated.

For film lovers, it is worth rewatching one or two of the films before you go. Recognising a street corner or a temple gate from Gladiator or Kingdom of Heaven makes the sets far more fun, and the guides enjoy the questions.

Best time to visit

  • March–May and October–November: warm days, comfortable walking between sets.
  • June–September: very hot (often 38–43 °C) and little shade; visit first thing in the morning.
  • December–February: sunny but cold mornings, and check the Tichka pass forecast.

Bring a hat, sunscreen and water. Sometimes parts of the lot close during active shoots; you may see crews at work but photography of them is not allowed.

Short on time? Alternatives closer to Marrakech

If a two-day trip does not fit your plans, there are good full-day outings closer to the city. The waterfalls at Ouzoud offer a gorge, boat rides and wild monkeys; our guide to the Barbary macaques at Ouzoud explains how to see them properly. Quick FAQ

How long do you need at Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate?

About one hour for the main guided tour, up to two hours if you add the outlying sets and take your time with photos.

Is Atlas Studios worth visiting?

For film fans, yes; for others it is a fun stop on the road to the desert rather than a destination on its own.

Can I visit Atlas Studios on a day trip from Marrakech?

It is possible but tiring, with around 9 hours of driving. An overnight stop in Ouarzazate or Aït Benhaddou is much more comfortable.
